How to get your business cited by ChatGPT

ChatGPT's citations aren't a mystery — they run on a search index you can influence, crawlers you can allow, and content habits you can copy. Here's the mechanical version.

When ChatGPT answers 'best accountant for small e-commerce businesses' or 'is it worth repairing a 12-year-old water heater', it increasingly searches the web and cites sources — and being one of them puts your business inside a recommendation that feels, to the person asking, like advice from a knowledgeable friend. Getting cited isn't luck and isn't magic; it's a pipeline with knowable parts. Here they are, from plumbing to content.

The plumbing: three crawlers, three jobs

OpenAI documents three bots, and they do different things — worth knowing because blocking the wrong one costs you citations:

  • OAI-SearchBot — indexes content for ChatGPT's search feature. This is the one citations flow through; block it and you've opted out of being recommended.
  • GPTBot — collects training data for future models. Allowing or blocking it is a legitimate policy choice about your content and model training — separate from search visibility.
  • ChatGPT-User — fetches a page when a user asks ChatGPT to look at it live.

All three are controlled in robots.txt, and OpenAI notes changes take about a day to propagate. The five-minute audit: open yoursite.com/robots.txt and check you're not blocking OAI-SearchBot — some 'block AI bots' plugins and CDN settings block everything indiscriminately, which quietly removes you from the citation pool while your competitors stay in it.

The index: ChatGPT search stands partly on Bing

OpenAI built ChatGPT's search on partnerships including Microsoft — and the practical consequence was measured by Seer Interactive: 87% of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing's top results in their study. The unglamorous action item writes itself: set up Bing Webmaster Tools (free, minutes), submit your sitemap, and check your important pages are indexed there. A decade of 'nobody optimizes for Bing' jokes just became a quiet advantage for whoever does the five minutes — the second search engine is now the supply chain for the fastest-growing answer channel.

Who gets cited: what the studies agree on

Across the citation research — Semrush's multi-month study of AI citations, plus several large brand analyses — three patterns repeat. Community and reference sites (Reddit, Wikipedia) are heavily cited but violently volatile: ChatGPT's Reddit citation rate collapsed from roughly 60% to 10% in a single month after a model update, which is the strongest argument against building your strategy on any one platform's current favor. Brand presence across the web — mentions, reviews, coverage — correlates with being recommended more strongly than any on-site tweak; assistants recommend businesses the web already talks about. And freshness matters: recently updated pages dominate citations in multiple analyses, which makes your refresh habit an AI-visibility tactic now, not just an SEO one.

ChatGPT recommends businesses the web already vouches for. The citation is the last step of a reputation that exists elsewhere first.

The content that gets lifted

Once you're findable, citation is an extraction problem — the same one the GEO research measured. ChatGPT quotes pages that hand it a complete, evidenced answer: a question-shaped heading, a self-contained two-sentence answer under it, concrete numbers, a source or a named human attached. For 'best X for Y' queries specifically, honest comparison content is disproportionately cited because it matches the question's shape — one more reason commercial-investigation topics belong in your calendar. Run your key pages through the AEO checklist; the page-level five are exactly what extraction rewards.

Measuring whether it's working

  • Referral traffic — ChatGPT tags its outbound clicks with utm_source=chatgpt.com, so a simple analytics segment shows visits, and what those visitors did, cleanly.
  • The monthly ask — put your ten money questions to ChatGPT the way a customer would phrase them, and note who's recommended and cited. It's the only direct view of the answers themselves.
  • The survey — much of ChatGPT's influence arrives with no click at all: someone gets a recommendation, then searches your name or walks in. An 'AI assistant' option on your how-did-you-hear question is the only instrument that catches it.

Expectations, calibrated: for most small businesses the referral numbers are small today — this is an early channel, not a replacement one. But everything on this page is either free plumbing (robots.txt, Bing), habits you should have anyway (reviews, presence, fresh pages), or writing quality that pays on every channel. The bet costs almost nothing, and the businesses making it now are the ones the assistants will have already learned to recommend when the numbers stop being small.
